Plastics
We have identified two initial projects to work on:
- Firstly, in conjunction with groups to the east and west of us, we'd like to encourage businesses along and around Hadrian's Wall to join the national water bottle refill campaign and discourage the use and sale of single use water bottles.
- Secondly we plan to audit the packaging used in Haltwhistle's shops. Do our take-aways use cardboard or polystyrene boxes? Do loose veg suppliers offer customers paper or plastic bags? Where plastic is used are alternatives available and are the businesses receptive to requests to switch?
The next meeting to take these two ideas forward is on Weds May 15th at 7.30pm in the Old Booking Hall at Haltwhistle Station. A further meetng is planned for Tues 18th June. Do come along if you are concerned about plastics in our environment and would like to get involved in either aspect of this project.

Haltwhistle Annual Plant Festival.
Sat, 18th May at the Leisure Centre, 9.30am - 15.30pm
Visit our seed swap stall and stop for a chat about our current projects and the program for this years verge walks in July and August with Lesley Silvera. Visit the rest of the fair for a chance to buy a marvellous variety of locally grown - i.e. acclimatised to our climate! - plants from specialist nurseries. Plus crafts and a delicious local produce/fair trade cafe.

Restarters Group
Duncan Wise, visitor development and marketing manager for the NNPA, is setting up a Restarters Group at the Sill. Restarters is a national network aiming to grow community based electronics repair. The world needs more fixing and more fixing skills to be shared.

The forgotten lands festival 7th to 9th June
A 3 day community festival near Bewcastle featuring: country craft skills, a foraging walk with hay meadows and history, church floral display and remembrance garden, 2 days of music near Maddy Prior's Stones Barn, games and sideshows, sheepdog and dog agility demonstrations, fell and miniature ponies, field games, a tractor run, a talk on the Bewcastle Cross, a Celtic service (with teze chanting), dark skies star gazing, a pets corner and children's games.

Polly Higgins, campaigner for Ecocide law
I heard the late Polly Higgins speak in Newcastle a few years ago and was impressed by the clarity of her vision and cogency of her arguments. Polly, who has died aged 50 of cancer, begun to see the climate activist movement take up her call in the weeks before her death, with Extinction Rebellion actions demanding that ecocide law be established around the world.
What would it take to create a legal duty of care for the Earth? That is the question the Scottish barrister Polly Higgins found herself asking 15 years ago; a question that led her to abandon her courtroom career and embark on a quest to establish an international crime of ecocide. Such a crime would render persons of superior responsibility (such as company chief executives and government ministers) liable to prosecution for causing or contributing to large-scale ecosystem destruction.
Polly delivered the 50th anniversary Rachel Carson Memorial Lecture in 2012 in London and was named one of the world's top 10 visionary thinkers by the Ecologist magazine.

The UN declares 2021 to 2030 the decade on Ecosystem Restoration.
Ecosystem restoration is defined as a process of reversing the degradation of ecosystems, such as landscapes, lakes and oceans to regain their ecological functionality; in other words, to improve the productivity and capacity of ecosystems to meet the needs of society. This can be done by allowing the natural regeneration of overexploited ecosystems, for example, or by planting trees and other plants. Restoration practices have been proven to fight the climate crisis and enhance food security, water supply and biodiversity.
