Another Way - leading change towards environmentally sustainable lifestyles
Another Way is a Cumbrian charity inspired by 16 year-old Amy Bray and dedicated to helping people change to a more environmenally sustainable lifestyle. Another Way will be officially launched on Saturday, 31st August, with Another Waynwright Day.
Here's what is being organised:
Volunteers are being asked to walk up all the Lake District Wainwrights on the same day at the same time. We are garnering quite substantial support including from some well known people: Mike Berners-Lee, Sir Chris Bonington, Chris Packham, Terry Abraham, Paul Rose, Stephen Birkinshaw and Roz Savage; as well as the RSPB, the Lake District National Park, The Wainwright Society, Cumbria Tourism, Visit Eden, Brathay Trust, Fix the Fells, Cumbria Action for Sustainability, PACT, Cumbria Wildlife Trust, Eden Rivers Trust, Surfers Against Sewage and the Tree Council.
We will be running various activities on the fells that fit in with our aims and values. So far we have about 30 activities including Mardale moths, yoga, pilates, a brass band, 2 choirs, wild swimming, compost making, nature friendly farming, wild art, limited mobility buggies, art and poetry and many others in the pipeline. We also have a sculpture artist who is voluntarily making Amy a unique life size sculpture to represent the charity's vision which is to help individuals change for the health of themselves and our planet, to unite towards this aim and to do it now. Mountain Rescue will be carrying this to the summit on the day where Amy is likely to be filmed and she will also receive a video call of support from Paul Rose from the Russian Arctic.

STS plans to support the day - would you like to join in?
STS, SB and Lets Get Together are planning to hire a minibus, pick-ups to be in Haltwhistle & Brampton, to go to Carrock Fell. Tim Coombe, from Sustainable Brampton, will lead a walk up the fell to be on the summit at 1pm. National refill project - Refill along the Wall
Tim Coombe has registered Refill along the Wall with the National Refill project. We are now in the proces of organising promotional materials. If you are able to join the team signing appropriate businesses up to this initiative please take a look at the website www.refill.org.uk to see what is involved and then get in contact with me to confirm the area you can cover.

Heat from mine water
Dr Charlotte Adams of BritGeothermal at Durham University and Phill Dunn of Riever Renewables are both supportive of our initiative to investigate the potential for a community energy project in Haltwhistle based on extracting heat from water in old mines. Haltwhistle Partnership has also agreed to help us with this project and over the next few months we will be gathering information and evidence of community support in order to apply for a Rural Community Energy Fund grant to commission a feasibility study. We will probably be meeting during August to advance this initiative but date and time is still to be decided, do get in touch if you would like to join the group working on this.
The next meeting for both the plastics and the energy initiatives are scheduled for September so details will be in the next newsletter but earlier meetings on the refill and/or minewater water projects are likely to be arranged. If you haven't yet attended a meeting and would like to get involved please let me know.

Verge Walk
Tues 13th August: Meet at Cawfields car park 7pm - Meet at car park; we are going to look at Markham. Grid ref: 714666
Please join us for this short walk (2 miles there and back max) to survey wild flowers on or near road verges. Just turn up, no need to book. We'll be on paths and/or tarmac. We aim to finish by 9pm. Any queries, please get in touch with Lesley Silvera, 01434 607988.

Extinction Rebellion - The time is now tour - 12th August
Dr Gail Bradbrook, a founder member of Extinction Rebellion in Oct 18, will be in Carlisle on Monday 12th August as part of her 'The Time is Now' tour at 7pm at the University of Cumbria, Learning Gateway lecture theatre, Fusehill Campus, Carlisle.

Hats Off
Go!Gilsland has taken delivery of a hybrid electric car, to be known as the Gilsland 'G-Ggaxy', and the community transport scheme is poised to start.
From Monday 12th August journeys can be booked by calling 07399 993 979 between 7am & 9pm.
This ecxiting trail blazing initiative has been achieved thanks to the above-and-beyond efforts of Wendy Bond with support from a range of funders.
